The annual RAMCAT fishing competition once again brought waves of joy and camaraderie to Durban Harbour on 21st April 2025. This beloved event, hosted by a tight-knit group of Veterans, has long been a highlight for many wheelchair-bound Veterans who look forward to this special day all year. With careful planning, the organisers ensure the fish are well-enticed to the harbour wall in the weeks leading up to the event - so by the time the competition kicks off at 07h00, excitement is already running high.
After a hearty breakfast, Veterans from all over South Africa cast their lines into the waters. The morning was filled with laughter, friendly banter, and the unmistakable energy of shared memories and mutual respect. A generous lunch refuelled the group before one last round of fishing, followed by the much-anticipated weigh-in and prizegiving.

This year's event held an especially touching moment. Veteran Wally Coombe, representing SAMVOZA Durban Club, presented a wheelchair donation to long-time organiser Gert Smal.
The wheelchair will be given to a deserving Veteran in need - offering not just mobility, but dignity and independence. The gesture was met with heartfelt appreciation, as smiles mixed with tears in a truly emotional moment.
The RAMCAT competition is more than just fishing - it's about connection, community and care of our special Veterans. Many participants, despite the challenges they face, find this day a source of healing and happiness.
Together , we remember. Together, we serve.
